The ClaraOCR project came to life in 1999. The aim of the project was to develop a high-performing text recognition program, also known by its technical name of OCR Software (Optical Character Recognition Software). ClaraOCR appeared under the same name as the project and features a GUI for X Window System, as well as through a web interface. This high-performing open source program was first developed for Linux, but was later adapted for use with other Unix systems.
Thanks to the integrated web module, the Clara OCR user had access to an extensive character recognition database, which was especially suited to supporting larger digitalisation projects. As well as the original purpose of this software, OCR is also known for optical character recognition. OCR forms the basis of various software and supports everyday computer use in different situations which might require text to be taken from optical sources (such as images, PDF documents etc.). There is now such a wide range of OCR software available, that open source solutions are now on offer, as well as those which need to be paid for.
The Clara OCR software is no longer available in its original form, so on claraocr.org we would like to concentrate on the current offer of OCR software, giving our visitors as much information as possible about this diverse topic.
